Kala teetar, also known as the black francolin, is a bird species native to the Indian subcontinent. Here are some key features and information about the kala teetar:

Appearance:

The kala teetar is a medium-sized bird with a plump body and a rounded tail. The male and female have different appearances. The male kala teetar has black feathers with intricate white and black markings on its face, neck, and chest. It also has a reddish-brown beak and legs. The female kala teetar, on the other hand, has a more subdued appearance with predominantly brown feathers.

Habitat:

Kala teetars are found in a variety of habitats, including grasslands, agricultural fields, scrublands, and open forests. They prefer areas with dense vegetation cover and are often found near water sources like rivers or ponds.

Behavior:

Kala teetars are primarily ground-dwelling birds. They are known for their distinctive calls, especially the loud and melodious "tee-tee-tee" sound, which is where they get their name "teetar" from. Males often call to establish territories and attract females during the breeding season.

Diet:

The diet of kala teetars consists mainly of plant matter, such as seeds, grains, fruits, and leaves. They also feed on insects, spiders, and other small invertebrates.

Breeding:

During the breeding season, which typically occurs from March to August, male kala teetars perform elaborate courtship displays to attract females. They engage in displays like puffing up their feathers, raising their crest, and making calling sounds. The female constructs a ground nest, usually hidden in vegetation, where she lays and incubates the eggs. The eggs hatch after a couple of weeks, and both parents participate in raising the chicks.

Conservation status:

The kala teetar is not currently listed as globally threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). However, habitat loss, hunting, and illegal trade for its meat and feathers are some of the factors that pose threats to its population.

Please note that the information provided here is based on the general knowledge available up until September 2021, and there may be more recent updates or research on kala teetars.
